What is video production

Video production is simply everything that goes into the ideation, planning and execution of a video. Historically video production involves three phases: Pre-production, Production and Post-production.

Our experience as a video production and marketing agency has taught us that the production of a video doesn’t end at Post-production. But as it pertains to video production for marketing purposes, wewant to include the two additional phases of Strategy and Distribution to ensure a successful, dynamic finished product.

The first part of any video project is pre-production. This encompasses everything needed to lay the groundwork for the whole project, from financing to planning, hiring, and everything in between. The goal is to work out as many kinks as possible before production starts, so that the rest of the project runs smoothly and stays on budget.

Pre-production will look different for every project. A local marketing video and a high-budget music video will have different resources, budgets, and creative priorities. But no matter what type of video you’re making, don’t cut corners on pre-production planning, as it sets the tone for the rest of the project.

Once you complete your pre-production outlines, it’s time to put your plan into action. Also called principal photography, the production phase is when you shoot your footage on location. Any B-roll, voice-overs, or other sound effects needed for the final film are also recorded during this stage.

Filmmaking is a large undertaking no matter the scale of your video project, with many hands involved to bring it to life. Make sure you build a crew that can cover every area on set. A small crew that covers the essentials could include a camera operator or videographer, director, producer, sound mixer, and gaffer to handle lighting.

Once you’ve got all your footage, you’re ready to take it to the editing booth. This step of production has its own team of specialists who work to organize, compile, sequence, and enhance raw footage into high-quality video. Colorists do color correction and color grading, while sound engineers mix audio recordings.

Editing is kept to a tight timeline, just like principal photography, but this phase does allow you time to get every piece just the way you want it. For a polished final product, editors opt for industry-standard video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro.

ighting can make or break the aesthetic of your video production. Poorly selected locations, ugly fluorescents, and unfortunate choice of patterned clothing can damage your video to breaking point.

Sure, you can address some lighting issues in the edit, but for the highest possible quality, you should aim to start with premium footage. The purpose of lighting in film is to facilitate maximum capture quality.

Bad sound quality is probably the most common fault with DIY video footage. There’s no room for poorly recorded sound in professional film making.

Even if you’re shooting your footage with pro-video kit, we’d still recommend that you record your sound separately and synchronise it with the footage in the edit.

Alternatively, use clip mics connected directly (or remotely) to your cam

There are occasions where you might consider delivering to camera off-the-cuff, but does it promote your brand in the most flattering light?

Few public speakers would dare turn up to the podium without at least a bullet-point plan of what they’re going to say, and you should treat your video content with the same gravity.

When presenting directly to camera, have a plan, if not a word-for-word script. It’s the best way to ensure that your message is delivered accurately, professionally, and on-note is to prepare.

However, reading from a script can feel unemotional and stuffy. If you’re looking for genuine, emotive performances, sometimes it’s better to freeform it from bullet points and Jump-Cut in the edit (see later).

Have a plan determining the types of shots you want. Storyboarding can help create a deliverable message that you can pitch to your peers, and it gives you a good idea of the type of footage you’re looking for.

You should rehearse each shot. You might get to your location and discover obstacles that you hadn’t counted on. Or perhaps the lighting isn’t right. Rehearsing each shot is a video filming technique that helps you to master unexpected turns, steps, and barriers to ensure that you get the best possible footage.

A rehearsed performance is a polished performance, projecting a professional sheen for your brand message.

Consider the composition of each shot. If you have a fixed camera angle and a stationary presenter, placing them in the middle of the shot doesn’t always give you the most attractive aesthetic.

The rule of thirds is a concept that helps you create more interestingly composed set-pieces by making more effective use of the aspect ratio of your available on-screen real estate.

B-roll clips are complementary footage that adds additional visual interest on top of your primary subject. When shooting an interview, you may choose a mid-shot of your interview subject, speaking directly to (or just off) camera.

It’s good to grab as much B-roll footage as you can during your shoot; it helps to break up the monotony of a single shot.

of course, we’ve been talking about capturing the best possible footage before you get into the edit suite.

But:

There are always going to sections of your footage that let you down; it’s just how it goes.

Perhaps your interview subject twitched while they were speaking; maybe the natural lighting dropped.

Never fear: for you have B-roll.

The edit is the opportunity to intersperse your A-footage with your B-roll to cover over the visual ticks and errors.

Keep the audio from the A-roll going and intercut with your complimentary shots; it increases visual interest while allowing you to compensate for visual errors.

Video Production FAQs

We’re hoping we’ve provided you with some answers below, but were always available for a chat if you have any other questions.

What is the importance of video production?

Still not sure how this applies to you and your business?

By 2019, video content will account for 80% of ALL consumer internet traffic. Which means that you can no longer afford to ignore the potential of video production for your business. Professional video production services can help you to open up new consumer markets, add credibility and engagement to your online presence and increase conversion rates, to name but a few benefits.

Especially for businesses just starting out, video can capture the attention and understanding of your target audience in under 2 minutes. When viewers watch a video, they retain 95% of the message, yet only 10% after reading written content.

Did you know that nearly 50% of internet users look for videos about a product or service before they go out shopping?

Marketers who used video production also grew their revenue 49% faster than non-video users.

What’s more, by including a video on your homepage you can increase conversion rates by 20 percent or more.

There’s something about video that ignites more excitement and trust in you: 39% of executives who have visited a marketer’s site have called them up after watching a marketing video.

Video is simply easier to be engaged by for many people, and higher engagement leads to more customer conversions.

Video shows a brand’s personality, culture, and ethos.

Your visual assets are extremely important. They’re a chance to show off all of these things to your audience.

Watching a video is the most effective way to see what a brand can accomplish creatively, along with what they ‘sound’, ‘look’ and ‘feel’ like.

Bad sound is unforgiveable for video viewers – the only exception is social media video content.

Don’t rely too heavily on sound alone for social media, as 85% of Facebook video is watched without it.

Video production is the strongest asset you have in marketing today. It’s versatile, fun, vibrant, informative, digestible… and infinitely shareable.

When you hear ‘video content’, your first thought is probably of teenagers using Snapchat or Instagram influencers creating Instagram stories. And a large proportion of video content is made by individuals on social media. However, for professionally filmed and edited videos, most media companies, businesses and brands use video production companies like our Newcastle based video production team, who can smoothly manage the process from beginning to end.

Everyone! Increasingly, online video content is being consumed by pretty much every demographic. Although, be careful because this doesn’t mean that every type of video will appeal to every demographic. As we discuss below, knowing your audience and what type of video is best suited to your purpose is key. This is another advantage of using a video production company like ours- we have experience creating different types of video content, so we can work with you to research and narrow down your target audience and tailor your video exactly to your purpose.

As a starting point we’ll arrange a face-to-face meeting or ask you to fill out a short questionnaire to help us understand the project requirements. From there you can have as much or as little input into the scripting, filming and editing as you’d like. In any case we’ll keep you informed at every step of the process.

For animation, we generally agree the key messages with you and then we work on a draft script and a suggested visual style for review. However we’re also happy to work from a full script or storyboard provided to us.

Alongside the filming we’ll create any motion graphics required for the video. These could range from a simple animated logo to a series of stylish infographics. We always use graphics in a way that complements rather than complicates the message of the video.

We film everything on professional broadcast-quality 4K video cameras and use additional kit – such as radio mics, lighting kit, or green screen – where appropriate. We continually invest in new kit and software to keep up-to-date with the rapidly changing standards of the industry.

We generally keep backup copies of any footage and project files for a minimum of four years. We’re happy to revisit and update older projects – for example if you have changed your branding or want to update facts and figures about your business. If there are concerns about data sensitivity we’re happy to delete all our copies of the media on completion of the project.

Not all of our projects are ‘traditional’ video or animation. In the past few years we’ve created phone apps, clickable animations, and interactive training courses where the viewer determines the outcome of the storyline. We’re more than happy to take a brief and provide costs, and advise where we think the project would benefit from additional expertise from our partner agencies.

What are the Benefits of video?

So we know that everyone is watching more videos, but does that mean that you should just throw a video on your landing page willy-nilly? No way. Before you hire a video production company, it’s important to know what the benefits of video are for your business so that you can get the most out of your video content.

Dwell time- video content increases the amount of time that people spend on your site.

Video is a fast and efficient way to communicate information to clients, investors, and staff
Research shows that including some of your staff in a video increases consumers trust in your company.

Video ads convert to more sales – including a video ad in a product description increases the chances of the item being purchased by 35%.

Emails and newsletters that contain videos have a much higher click through rates
People are lazy! They prefer to watch a video than read!

Before you start, make sure you know what your objectives are for the video content. What does your business currently need? Maybe you’d like a video to help boost online marketing or for lead generation? Perhaps you have a new product or message that you’d like to communicate? Or you want to grow your business and need a great video to build brand awareness and online engagement?

Once you’ve answered these questions and you have clear, specific objectives, you’ll see that your whole project will run more smoothly and stay on track. Ideally, your video production company will go through this process with you. We like to do this with all our clients, and we refer back to it often when we’re making decisions so that we always know we’re headed in the right direction with our video production.

The type of video production that is best suited to you will depend on your target audience. If you’re not sure who your target audience is, or if you’d like to grow or redirect your target audience, we can help you with your marketing strategy by creating marketing personas. A clear, developed marketing strategy with a defined target audience will ensure that your video content engages your ideal client.

Deciding on the message you want to convey in your video goes hand in hand with researching your target audience and is an essential step in the video production process. At Mediaborne, we will help you to ‘find your voice’. That means that as well as considering the specific purpose for your video we make sure that our work goes towards building, promoting and strengthening your brand.

A great place to start is choosing the format and production style for your video, as this is a large part of what shapes your message. As the media theorist Marshall McLuhan famously said, ‘the medium is the message’. We can advise you on the right type of video content for you. To help get you started, we’ve included just a few different types of video content that we’ve recently produced below.

Time-lapse videos– perfect for internal case studies, project progress updates and construction sites. Check out our time-lapse for the London FSB Award Nomination.

Event coverage videos– a great way to build brand awareness and bolster your online marketing.

Corporate video production services- a range of video types including a show reel of services and training videos.

Brand exposure and video marketing – an impressive and efficient way of communicating your brand values and services.

Let’s start with the question we get asked the most! For video, the answer depends on several things, for example:

Whether we’re filming in one location or several
How long we need to allow for filming and how large a crew we need
How complex the edited video is – especially if it involves animated elements
Whether we’re producing a single video or several related videos
For animation, the costs will depend on:

The style and complexity of animation (for example 2D versus 3D)
Whether we are working with existing assets such as characters or whether these need to be created from scratch

The duration of the final animation
Most importantly, we work with clients who have a range of budgets, so whatever your requirements we can find a solution.

Every project is different, but broadly speaking the production process can be broken down into three phases:

Pre-production: This is when we work with you to learn all about your business and together define what it is you need from video. Some of the questions we might explore are: Who is your target audience? What platforms do you want to publish on? What are the key messages you want to communicate?

From there we’ll create a video outline and/or detailed script, confirm budgets and arrange any filming dates with you.

Production: AKA ‘filming’. This is bit most people think of when they talk about creating videos. Our crew will capture all the required footage – such as interviews, event footage or product demonstrations. We might film at your premises, at our studio or at some other locations relevant to the video messages.

Post-production: Once we’ve captured all the footage we’ll get to work on the edit, crafting the footage into a coherent narrative and adding graphics, titles and music as appropriate. You’ll have chance to review one or more drafts and give feedback before everything is finalised.

Not every project requires a voiceover, but when it does we can provide you with a range of different voiceover samples to choose from and we’ll take care of the rest.

When a background music track is required we can source a suitable track from a royalty-free music library and provide a license for usage in the finished video.

Adding subtitles is an increasingly common request and we’re able to offer two options. We can either add subtitles directly to the video (so they always appear no matter when or how the video is accessed) or we can provide a separate subtitle file that can be uploaded to YouTube and other platforms alongside the video. This allows you to toggle the subtitles on and off, and to have several subtitle files in different languages for one video. We’ve provided video subtitles in over a dozen languages.

We usually supply our finished videos in the most commonly used formats, typically .mp4 or .mov. However we’re happy to convert these into pretty much any other format free of charge.

There’s no guarantee of what makes video content go ‘viral’ and we’d be wary of any organisation that promises to achieve this. However we’re happy to offer advice on distributing your content to the widest possible audience, and can recommend some of our trusted collaborators who specialise in SEO and social media if you wanted to explore this further.
